DGFI tip-off leads to recovery of 160 gold bars from Biman flight at Dhaka airport
The Directorate General of Forces Intelligence
(DGFI) received a tip-off at approximately 9:20am today (2 July) suggesting a
possible attempt to smuggle gold using the cargo hold of Biman Bangladesh
Airlines Flight BG-148, operating on the Dubai-Chattogram-Dhaka route.
Acting on the information, the DGFI, Aviation
Security (AVSEC), Customs authorities, and the Security Department of Biman
Bangladesh Airlines immediately launched a coordinated operation at the
airport, recovering approximately 15kg of gold during an initial search of the
aircraft.
A more extensive search later resulted in the
recovery of a total of 18.720kg of gold, comprising 160 gold bars, according to
a press release issued today by the authorities at Hazrat Shahjalal
International Airport.
The recovered gold has been handed over to the
Customs authorities, while the necessary legal proceedings are currently
underway, the press release added.
The authorities at Hazrat Shahjalal
International Airport said they remain committed to ensuring airport security,
preventing smuggling and maintaining law and order through the highest
standards of vigilance, professionalism and inter-agency coordination.
They added that such joint operations will
continue in the future with the concerted efforts of all relevant agencies.
