An outsider was detained at Jahangirnagar University (JU) early today (30 June) after being accused of secretly filming female students inside a washroom at the university's Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), authorities said.

The detainee, Riaz Ahmed alias Raj, a resident of Keraniganj, was detained from the TSC area at around 2:30am.

He is reported to be a branch manager of RFL Electronics Ltd.

Ashulia Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Azgor Hossain said police had received a written complaint.

"A case will be filed with Ashulia Police Station. After that, an investigation will be conducted, and legal action will be taken against him," he said.

According to a written complaint, eyewitnesses and victim students, several female students went to the TSC washroom after watching the ongoing Football World Cup match between Brazil and Japan at the university's Selim Al Deen Mukta Mancha. At that time, one of the students saw Riaz coming out of the washroom.

When questioned, he denied any wrongdoing. The students then informed others waiting outside and searched his mobile phone. They claimed to have found videos recorded through a small hole in the washroom door.

The students further alleged that the phone contained similar videos of female students recorded on the campus over the past six months, dating back to January this year.

Following the incident, some students assaulted the accused, according to witnesses.

Members of the university's security wing later intervened, rescued him from the scene and took him to the university's Prantik Gate. He was subsequently brought to the university's security office at around 5am.

The victim students later submitted a written complaint and went to Ashulia Police Station to file a case.

When asked about the allegations, Riaz claimed he had come to the university to watch the match on a big screen. He alleged that while he was heading towards the washroom, a friend took his phone and began recording videos before fleeing the area.

Asked about the videos allegedly found on the phone, Riaz said he had visited the university previously and had recorded some videos during those visits.

JU Proctor Professor AKM Rashidul Alam described the incident as "extremely despicable" and said the university had decided to file a case as the complainant.
