Ex-central bank deputy governor SK Sur handed 3-year prison term in graft case
A Dhaka court has sentenced former Bangladesh Bank deputy
governor Shitangshu Kumar (SK) Sur Chowdhury to three years in prison in a case
filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for failing to submit his asset
statement.
Judge
Ayesha Nasrin of Dhaka's Special Judge Court-2 delivered the verdict this
morning (28 July), ACC lawyer SM Abul Kalam Azad confirmed.
Sur was present in court when the
verdict was delivered. Following the announcement of the judgment, the court
issued a conviction warrant and sent him back to prison to serve his sentence.
The case was filed on 23 December 2024 after Sur failed to comply with an ACC
notice requiring him to submit a detailed statement of his assets, liabilities,
sources of income, and all movable and immovable properties owned by him or his
dependants within 21 working days.
According
to the case documents, the notice had been issued following allegations that he
had accumulated assets beyond his known sources of income.
ACC
Deputy Director Nazmul Hossain filed the case under Section 26(2) of the
Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.
Deputy
Director Md Ahsan Uddin submitted the charge sheet on 4 August last year.
The
court framed charges against Sur on 6 November 2025, formally beginning the
trial.
During
the proceedings, all seven prosecution witnesses testified before the court.
The
ACC arrested Sur in Dhaka's Segunbagicha area on 14 January 2025 and has
remained in custody since then.
