ICT orders producing Zia assassination convict Mozzaffar in July Uprising case
The International Crimes Tribunal has ordered
that Major (retd) Md Mozzaffar Hossain, convicted in the assassination of
former president Ziaur Rahman, be produced before it on Thursday (23 July) in
connection with a case filed over crimes against humanity during the July
Uprising.
A three-member bench of ICT-2 led by Justice
Nazrul Islam Chowdhury passed the order today (21 July) following a prosecution
petition.
Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam told the
tribunal that Mozzaffar, arrested in the Ziaur Rahman assassination case, is
currently in the custody of the Military Police.
He sought a production warrant, saying Mozzaffar
was also involved in crimes against humanity.
Following the hearing, the tribunal directed the
authorities to produce him before it on Thursday.
Prosecutors Gazi MH Tamim, Faruk Ahmad, Shahidul
Islam Sardar, Shaikh Mahdi, Moinul Karim and others were present during the
hearing.
Yesterday, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said
Mozzaffar will be tried under military law through a general court-martial.
Speaking at a press conference, he said
Mozzaffar's associates have also been tried in a military court.
He added that Mozzaffar lived under a different
identity in a neighbouring country for many years before being arrested based
on intelligence and turned over to the army for trial under military law.
Mozzaffar had been on the run for 45 years. He
was arrested at a house in Dhaka's Banani on 15 July and handed over to the
Military Police at Dhaka Cantonment the following day.
